
| SAMUEL EPSTEIN, M.D., Doctorate of Medicine with honors at Guy's Hospital,
London, England, 1950. He later became a pathologist, earning degrees in
Tropical Medicine and Internal Medicine. He had a distinguished medical
career in England, where he was a pathologist for the Royal Army Medical
Corps. He also taught pathology and bacteriology at the University of London.
In 1960, he came to the United States, where he founded the Laboratories of Carcinogenesis and Toxicology, and The Children's Cancer Research Foundation in Boston. He was also appointed Senior Research Associate in Pathology at Harvard Medical School. Currently, Dr. Epstein is professor of occupational and environmental medicine at the School of Public Health, University of Illinois Medical Center, Chicago. He is internationally recognized as a scientific authority on cancer prevention, and on the carcinogenic effects of environmental pollutants. Dr. Epstein has authored 280 scientific articles and 7 books, including the prize-winning The Politics of Cancer, Hazardous Waste in America. He also co-authored with David Steinman The Safe Shoppers Bible. In addition, Dr. Epstein has written numerous editorials in leading national newspapers protesting government's unresponsiveness to the cancer epidemic. Dr. Epstein's consults for the U.S. Senate Committee on Public Works and for numerous congressional committees. He is also a member of the Federal Agency Advisory Committee, the EPA's Health Advisory Committee, and the Department of Labor Advisory Committee on the Regulation of Occupational Carcinogens. He has chaired the Air Pollution Control Association Committee on Biological Effects of Air Pollutants, presided over the Society of Occupational and Environmental Health, and founded the Environmental Mutagen Society. He is also past president of the Rachel Carson Council. Dr. Epstein is also the Chairman of the Cancer Prevention Coalition, formed in 1993 to focus public attention on the avoidable cancer epidemic and to develop policies and strategies for reversing the losing war against cancer.
