WILLIAM GRANT, Ph.D. obtained a B.A. and Ph.D. in Physics from the University of California, Berkeley. He then did Post Doctoral Research at the Free University Berlin, Germany.

He returned to California where he did pioneering demonstration experiments on the use of laser systems for the remote measurement of atmospheric trace species and aerosols. After 15 years of such work, he took a position as a Physicist at the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) Langley Research Center in Hampton, Virginia where he participated in airborne field missions using a laser system that made vertical profile measurements of ozone and aerosols as the plane traversed its flight path and did research on the atmosphere.

During his stay in Virginia, he conducted a project for the Sierra Club on the role of acid rain and ozone on the health of eastern oak and hickory forests. In the course of this project, he developed a facility for using the ecologic approach to link risk factors to health and disease outcomes.

His first application of the ecologic approach to human disease was the elucidation of the dietary links to Alzheimer’s disease in 1997. He then investigated the role of diet in the risk of other chronic diseases before turning his attention to the role of solar UVB and Vitamin D in reducing the risk of cancer and other diseases. In papers in 2002 and 2006 he has identified at least 16 Vitamin D-sensitive cancers as well as accounting for other risk factors in his model.

He retired from NASA in 2004 and moved to San Francisco, California, where he founded Sunlight, Nutrition and Health Research Center (SUNARC), in order to extend his health studies. He continues his research on risk factors for chronic diseases and publishes his findings in peer-reviewed journals. He has authorerd over 100 papers and edited 2 books and written several book chapters in his combined careers. He also wrote the foreword for Solar Power by Marc Sorenson, published September 2006.

Dr. Grant may be reached through his website www.sunarc.org and email wgrant@sunarc.org.

He will speak on Sunlight & Vitamin D For Cancer Prevention & Treatment.
